Rail works in Australia postponed on NRL grand final day — ABC News Australia
In Australia, planned track works on the Newcastle railway line were postponed so that Newcastle Knights fans could travel to Sydney without disruption for the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final. The decision was made after major train delays left hundreds of fans waiting for hours for transport at stations before the previous NRL final match.
As ABC News Australia reports, three Labor Party MPs from the Hunter region — Jenny Aitchison, Kate Washington and Tim Crakanthorp — said on social media that the works scheduled for Sunday would be postponed. The Newcastle Knights have reached the NRL grand final for the first time in 25 years.
Freight train breakdown
On the morning before the match, several wheels on a Pacific National freight train failed near Wyee. As a result, public transport services in that direction were suspended for several hours.

At Morisset station, fans waited for replacement transport. After waiting for several hours, Shane Clenton decided to drive to Sydney with a friend. Another passenger, Cass Pasco, arrived at the station at 9:35 and waited for a replacement train until nearly 15:00. According to her, passengers received little information about the situation.
Investigation into the causes of the incident
Transport for NSW rail operations manager Jas Tumber said the agency would contact Pacific National to determine the causes of the defects in two wagons. He also apologised to passengers and Knights fans affected by the disruptions.
According to ABC News Australia, this is already the third incident involving a Pacific National train in the past two months. Despite the transport problems, after the team’s victory, fans celebrated in Newcastle and gathered near the club’s headquarters to welcome the players.
