Australia to issue Bluey cricket coin — ABC News Australia

The Royal Australian Mint has unveiled a $1 collector coin based on an episode of the children’s animated series Bluey about backyard cricket. As ABC News Australia reports, 200,000 such coins will be minted, but they will not enter cash circulation.

Characters from the Cricket episode

The coloured coin depicts the character Rusty hitting a ball with a cricket bat, while Bluey cheers in the background. The release is dedicated to the third-season Bluey episode titled Cricket.

In this episode, Rusty’s father, who is serving in the military, writes a letter to his son. He advises the boy not to back down in the face of difficulties, to keep his eye on the ball and to look after his younger sister.

A new release for collectors

Mint chief executive Emily Martin said the idea behind the new coin combines Australians’ love of cricket with the popularity of the Bluey animated series. According to her, the coloured coin is dedicated to friendship, teamwork and memories of playing together.

This is not the Mint’s first collector release featuring Bluey characters. In 2024, it presented three coloured coins: with Bluey, the Heeler family, and Bingo and Bluey dressed as characters from The Grannies.
