Driver in Australia pleads guilty to fatal crash
In Australia, 31-year-old Lance O’Brien pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing the death of 45-year-old Wilia Sutherland, as well as to breaching bail conditions, ABC News Australia reports. The head-on collision occurred on October 2, 2025, on the Barmah—Shepparton Road near Kaarimba in Victoria.
Sutherland, a mother of four from Nathalia, was returning home after buying groceries in a Renault Captur with the family’s three dogs. At about 4:40 p.m., a Toyota Corolla driven by O’Brien crossed into her lane. The woman died at the crash scene. One of the family’s two border collies sustained critical injuries and was later euthanized.
Investigation findings
O’Brien was 30 at the time of the crash. He suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. A blood test found an alcohol reading of at least 1.43, as well as methamphetamine, amphetamine and nordiazepam.
According to prosecution documents, an expert from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine assessed that O’Brien’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the limit for fully licensed drivers and could have been almost four times higher. Prosecutor Angela Liantzakis told the court that an examination by the crash reconstruction unit established O’Brien’s vehicle speed at no less than 115–122 km/h at the time of the collision.

He held a P2 driver’s licence, which required a zero permissible blood alcohol level. At the time of the crash, the man was also on bail, the conditions of which prohibited him from driving, consuming alcohol, and using narcotic substances without lawful authorization. After the collision, while trapped in his vehicle, he asked a witness who had stopped to help whether he had killed anyone.
Family testimony
In court, the victim’s older sister, Annie Koopmans, said Wilia Sutherland’s death changed her life and destroyed the family. The victim’s eldest daughter, Tammy Woods, said she learned about the crash while she was in Darwin, more than 3,000 kilometres from the scene.
The younger daughter, Emily, recalled in a statement read by the prosecutor that she celebrated her 21st birthday without her mother. During the hearing, O’Brien apologized to the family and said he could not change the past. Judge Carolyn Gwynn adjourned the case for further consideration in the Melbourne County Court later this month.
