Estonia Has Officially Set the Date for the Presidential Election — ERR
Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Estonian Parliament, officially announced the convening of an extraordinary session of the Riigikogu on September 2 to hold elections for the country’s new president.
The head of the legislature made this decision following an official proposal from the current head of state, Alar Karis.
Estonia’s current leader, Alar Karis, has promised to finally announce his decision on whether he will run for a second term as early as June 25.
Earlier, behind the scenes, the politician had suggested that it was quite likely he would not participate in this election at all.
Under Estonian law, the head of state is elected directly by members of parliament within the parliament building.
The right to officially nominate a candidate for this position belongs to at least one-fifth of the total membership of the Riigikogu, which is equal to 21 members of parliament.
