Estonia has issued a warning about the risk of power outages due to heavy rain and strong winds

The Estonian Environment Agency is forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts of up to 20 meters per second for the weekend and early next week. Electricity grid operator Elektrilevi has warned that the severe weather could snap trees and branches and cause power outages, according to ERR News.

Heavy precipitation will spread across Estonia on Saturday afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms are expected in some areas, and winds will pick up in many regions, with gusts of 15–20 meters per second. On Sunday, the risk of downpours and thunderstorms will persist in many areas, and rainy weather will continue into the beginning of next week.

Mihkel Härm, chairman of the board at Elektrilevi, stated that the company is monitoring weather conditions and that its control center and volunteer crisis response team are prepared to respond intensively to any potential outages. Residents are advised to charge their phones and power banks in advance, as well as to keep a supply of drinking water and essential food items at home.

During heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, Elektrilevi advises staying indoors if possible, keeping pets at home, and avoiding non-essential trips. Drivers should adjust their speed according to weather conditions and be aware of the possibility of trees, branches, and other obstacles falling onto the road. The company urges people not to approach downed power lines and to report them to the emergency number 1343.

In the event of a power outage, they recommend using a battery-powered flashlight rather than candles. Elektrilevi asks that power outages be reported via the MARU app, and up-to-date information on the number and location of outages is available on the operator’s map.
