In Estonia, Pennu the dog finds a home after 1,497 days in a shelter
In Estonia, Pennu the dog, who spent more than four years at the Tartu Shelter for Homeless Animals, found a home this spring. He was adopted by shelter volunteer Elisabet Kaldvee, who has been helping there for seven years.
Years in the shelter
As ERR News reports, Pennu spent 1,497 days at the shelter. The institution's director, Annika Melder, explained the long wait by saying that some animals are simply unlucky in finding their owner.
The dog arrived at the shelter from a home after an incident in which he bit another dog and a child. According to Melder, the dogs were likely in conflict with each other, and the child may have ended up between them. The previous owner decided not to keep the animal, considering the responsibility for the dog too great.

The volunteer's work
Kaldvee recalled that when Pennu arrived, he was not trained to walk on a leash, had no training skills, and had little contact with people. He also reacted sharply to other dogs. The shelter worked with him extensively and trained him.
At first, Kaldvee paid more attention to another dog living next to Pennu. She began walking Pennu about three years ago. Over time, the volunteer became increasingly attached to him and considered taking him home.
A new home
According to his new owner, Pennu has adapted well to his new home. She described him as a very friendly dog and noted that three years of working together helped them grow together. Kaldvee also urged people to consider adopting older dogs from shelters: after adapting to home conditions, they mostly rest calmly during the day, she said.
