Volcán de Fuego (which translates from Spanish as “Volcano of Fire”) is an active stratovolcano located on the border of the departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez. It is part of the Sierra Madre mountain range and is located approximately 16 kilometers from the tourist town of Antigua.
Fuego is considered one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. It is characterized by nearly continuous low-level activity. Small emissions of gas and ash can occur here every 15–20 minutes, while larger eruptions are recorded much less frequently.
Among the most recent significant episodes of volcanic activity were eruptions in 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025. This latest incident has once again highlighted the danger that Fuego poses to local residents and tourists, even despite its popularity among adventure travelers.
