At least 62 killed in India due to torrential rains and floods — Asharq Al-Awsat

At least 62 people have died in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after several days of heavy rains and flooding. Another 46 people were injured, and more than 1,000 homes were damaged as a result of three days of torrential downpours that caused flooding in several districts of the state.

This was reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, citing local authorities. Schools were closed on Monday in parts of the state, including the capital, Lucknow. Rescue teams evacuated residents from flooded areas to safe locations.

Warning for residents

Residents of Uttar Pradesh were urged to avoid non-essential travel through flooded areas and not to approach rivers, streams, and drainage canals with strong currents. Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, said rainfall was expected to weaken from Monday as the weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakened.

According to him, light rain could persist in the eastern and western parts of the state until Tuesday.

Consequences of severe weather in the region

Flooding also affected the eastern Indian state of Odisha, where more than 75,000 people were evacuated to safe locations. In neighboring Nepal, 21 people died in weather-related incidents from Thursday to Sunday, five people were considered missing, and another five were injured. Floods and landslides in the country damaged 194 homes.

Nepal is also continuing to recover from the August floods, which killed more than 1,400 people and left nearly 6,000 people missing.
