Two people were publicly executed in Iran for participating in protests

Two men accused of involvement in the deaths of police officers during mass protests in the city of Isfahan were executed in Iran. According to local eyewitnesses, the execution was public and was met with protests by citizens, whom security forces dispersed using tear gas. To date, at least 27 people have been executed in the country in connection with anti-government demonstrations.

Mass demonstrations in Iran erupted against the backdrop of an economic crisis and quickly escalated into protests against the current authoritarian regime. The authorities brutally suppressed the demonstrations, resulting in the deaths of thousands of protesters.

According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, while various trends were observed last year in Russia and other countries in the region, it was in Iran that at least 2,159 people were executed, including political prisoners and those accused of espionage. Human rights activists emphasize that the Iranian authorities use the death penalty as a primary tool to intimidate the population.
