Debates over electoral reform and access to abortion continue in Italy
In Italy, Giorgia Meloni’s government is facing criticism ahead of the 2027 elections over its potential to increase its influence over the judicial system, the media, and election rules. This was reported in a France 24 program examining the state of the country’s democratic institutions.
Sandro Gozzi, a Member of the European Parliament elected in France for Renew Europe, stated that Meloni is leading Italy in an increasingly less liberal direction. He cited restrictions on civil rights, political pressure on the media, and a proposal to allocate additional seats in parliament to the winning coalition. According to France 24, the lower house of parliament has already approved this proposal, but the Senate has not yet ratified it.

Abortion has become a separate issue. While the procedure is technically legal in Italy, the widespread use by medical professionals of the “conscientious objection” clause makes access to it unequal. In some parts of the country, women have limited or virtually no access to such medical care.
