A former intelligence officer has been detained in Italy on suspicion of spying for Russia
In Rome, law enforcement officials detained two people as part of an investigation into alleged espionage on behalf of Russia. One of the detainees is a 59-year-old former Italian intelligence officer and ex-Carabiniere.
According to investigators, he is suspected of espionage and unauthorized access to information systems. Investigators believe the man received money from a Russian intelligence officer who is in Italy under diplomatic cover.
According to law enforcement, the former intelligence officer received information from six sources, including four active-duty military personnel. They are currently under investigation as well.
