In Israel, a second-grader attacked his teacher with a metal bottle
At a school in Petah Tikva, Israel, a second-grader injured his teacher by throwing a metal bottle at her during an incident in the classroom. The teacher was hospitalized with a head injury, and the incident prompted a response from the teachers’ union.
The incident occurred as the teacher attempted to stop a conflict between students, which escalated into uncontrollable behavior on the part of one of the children.
A homeroom teacher at an elementary school in Petah Tikva was trying to break up a fight between students when one of the second-graders suddenly became aggressive and attacked her. According to reporters, he first struck the teacher, and when she tried to call for help, he attempted to snatch her phone.
The situation then quickly spiraled out of control: the child began hitting school desks with a metal bottle, overturning tables, and frightening the other students in the classroom. The teacher tried to protect the children and calm the situation, but at that moment, the boy threw the bottle at her, hitting her directly in the head; as a result, she sustained an injury and was taken to the hospital.
Following the incident, the teachers’ union announced changes to the school’s schedule, including moving the start of the school day to 10:00 a.m. The circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation, and the case itself has sparked a public debate regarding the safety of teachers and how to respond to aggressive behavior by students in the lower grades.
