In Israel, Netanyahu orders evacuation of some West Bank outposts

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the evacuation of some settlement outposts in the West Bank that are considered illegal under Israeli law. This was stated by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Smotrich’s statement

According to Smotrich, as far as he knows, Netanyahu instructed that certain settlements be evacuated. The finance minister added that he does not approve of this decision.

It is currently unknown when the operation may begin. The Israeli website Ynet previously reported that the orders concerned about 100 outposts in the occupied territory.

Status of settlements

UN bodies and most governments consider all Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law and regard the territory as occupied and under military control. Israel insists that the West Bank is disputed rather than occupied territory.

Some outposts established without government authorization, and often consisting of only a few prefabricated buildings, are also considered illegal under Israeli law.

On the previous day, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, after meeting several Americans of Palestinian origin in a Palestinian city in the West Bank, called violent settlers terrorists and urged severe consequences for them.
