In the UAE, Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed a research project dedicated to the history of Al-Khuzam, a traditional element of Emirati culture. Dubai Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed, and Minister of Cabinet Affairs Mohammed Al Gergawi reviewed the initiative with him.
The history of Al-Khuzam
As The National reports, the research traces three stages in the development of Al-Khuzam. Initially, it was used to control camels and navigate the desert. Later, it became part of everyday clothing and lifestyle, and it is now regarded as a symbol of Emirati identity.
The project draws on historical evidence from different parts of the Arab world. Al-Khuzam is also mentioned in Arabic poetry, where it was associated with camels, travel, leadership and resilience.

Production and contemporary design
The project will document traditional methods of making Al-Khuzam, from collecting wool to spinning fibres into threads and braiding rope. Knots, rings and silver chains are then added to the item, combining practical purpose with decorative elements.

The distinctive rings, threads and other details of Al-Khuzam are already inspiring Emirati designers and entrepreneurs who create collections based on its symbolism. The project is intended to support artisans, designers and entrepreneurs in promoting this cultural item in contemporary society while preserving its connection to Emirati heritage.
