In the U.S., a key general who coordinated support for Ukraine has been relieved of his command
Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, who led the U.S. Army’s V Corps and was responsible for the military operations of U.S. forces in Europe, was relieved of his command ahead of schedule. He also played an important role in coordinating military support for Ukraine.
According to a Department of Defense spokesperson, Charles Costanza was relieved of his duties over the past few days, although his term was set to end in about two months.
The reasons for the decision have not yet been disclosed.
The general’s removal comes amid sweeping changes in the U.S. military’s top leadership. According to ABC News, since Pete Hagset took office as Secretary of Defense, more than two dozen high-ranking officers have been removed or suspended from duty, often without public explanation.
At the same time, a source familiar with the situation surrounding Costanza stated that his removal is not related to Hagset’s broader efforts to restructure the U.S. military leadership and has no political basis.
Major General Thomas Feltie is set to become the new commander of V Corps. His nomination has already been confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and the transfer of command was previously scheduled for October.
For now, Brigadier General John B. Mountford, the corps’ deputy commander for readiness, is temporarily serving as acting commander of the V Corps.
The U.S. Army’s V Corps is responsible for managing U.S. ground forces and coordinating military operations in Europe. Some of its units are stationed in Poland.
Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the corps’ role has become significantly more important. In particular, it has been involved in coordinating U.S. military support for Kyiv and has been responsible for the U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank.
Charles Costanza specializes in armored forces and has led the V Corps since April 2024. Prior to that, he commanded the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Costanza’s removal also came amid a reduction in the U.S. military presence in Europe.
ABC News notes that one of the most notable decisions this year was the Pentagon’s sudden decision to cancel the planned deployment to Poland of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division, which is based at FortGoody, Texas.
No official explanation has yet been released regarding the early removal of Charles Costanza from command of the U.S. V Corps.
