In Hungary, a case of "espionage" has been brought against journalist Pani
The Hungarian Ministry of Justice is preparing a statement regarding a possible criminal case against investigative journalist Szabolcs Páni on suspicion of espionage.
This was announced by Gergely Gulyás, head of the Prime Minister’s Office.
According to him, the government has instructed the Ministry of Justice to prepare an expert opinion and act within the law. The allegations center on the suspicion that the journalist allegedly collaborated with a foreign state.
Pani works on investigative projects for Direkt36 and VSquare. The basis for the accusations was a published audio recording of his conversation, in which he mentioned the possible wiretapping of Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó by a foreign intelligence service.
Following the publication, state media launched a campaign against the journalist, calling him a spy.
Pani himself did not deny the authenticity of the recording, but he did release the content of the conversation between Szijjártó and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that was being discussed.
