Norway's new king will reign as Haakon VIII

Following the death of King Harald V of Norway, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeded to the throne and became King Haakon VIII. Norway’s new monarch is 53 years old.

King Harald V died Friday morning at the age of 89 at the National Hospital in Oslo. According to the Royal Palace, he passed away at 6:35 a.m. local time.

Haakon VIII continued the tradition of the Norwegian royal family and chose the motto “Everything for Norway.”

This motto had already been used by several of Haakon’s predecessors on the throne, including his father, King Harald V. Harald himself, upon ascending the throne in 1991, also chose the motto “Everything for Norway.”

Crown Prince Haakon automatically became the new monarch following the death of Harald V. Previously, he had repeatedly served as regent when his father’s health deteriorated.

Following Haakon’s accession to the throne, his eldest child, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, became the heir to the Norwegian throne. This is in accordance with modern rules of succession, which grant equal priority to men and women.

Harald V reigned over Norway for more than 35 years, becoming one of Europe’s oldest monarchs. Following his death, the country is entering a new era of reign under the leadership of Haakon VIII.

This was reported by the Associated Press.

Following the death of King Harald V of Norway, his son Haakon automatically ascended to the throne on August 28. He became the country’s new monarch in accordance with the rules of succession.

As a reminder, King Harald V of Norway has died.
