OIV chief says China has potential to produce high-quality wine — ECNS
John Barker, Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), said that China has the potential to become a major producer of high-quality wine. He linked this assessment to the country’s focus on production sustainability and the development of expertise in the characteristics of local terroirs.
Statement by the OIV chief
As ECNS reports, Barker spoke on August 27 at a press conference dedicated to the 47th World Congress of Vine and Wine and the OIV General Assembly in Beijing. According to him, China’s wine industry is gaining international recognition thanks to its openness, global vision and commitment to quality.

Congress in Ningxia
This year’s congress will pay special attention to Ningxia. Barker said that this highlights China’s role in shaping global standards, facilitating trade and protecting consumers.
Development of the region’s wine industry
Wang Li, deputy chairwoman of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said that the region has stabilized its wine industry during a period of transformation. The area of vineyards, the number of wineries and production volumes in Ningxia, she said, are among the highest in China. The congress is scheduled for October 12–16 in Yinchuan; its program includes a symposium, a science and technology forum, industry visits and the OIV General Assembly.
