Scientists have warned of the most powerful El Niño in history: what the world can expect
This year’s El Niño climate phenomenon is reaching record strength and could become the most severe in recorded history, surpassing the effects of the 1997–1998 event.
According to climatologists, surface water temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean are already 2.6°C above the long-term average, which corresponds to the level of a so-called “super El Niño.”
Experts note that the current development of the phenomenon is occurring faster and more intensely than during previous record-breaking episodes. Most climate models predict that the anomaly will peak in late 2026.
El Niño is a natural warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean that significantly affects weather conditions in various regions of the world.
Scientists warn that the consequences could include new temperature records, prolonged heat waves, widespread flooding in some countries, and droughts in others. The greatest risks are predicted for Southeast Asia, Indonesia, India, and South Africa, where a shortage of rainfall and deteriorating conditions for agriculture are expected.
In addition, rising ocean temperatures are increasing the threat of widespread bleaching and the death of coral reefs.
Researchers emphasize that the current El Niño is unfolding against the backdrop of global warming, so its consequences may prove to be significantly more severe than in previous decades. According to them, the natural climate cycle does not explain all weather anomalies but only exacerbates the effects of climate change.
