United Kingdom returns 12 cultural relics to China — ECNS

The United Kingdom handed over 12 lost cultural relics and works of art to China during a ceremony at the Chinese embassy in London on September 23. This was reported by ECNS, citing China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration.

Items seized by police

According to the Chinese agency, the cultural relics had previously been seized by London’s Metropolitan Police during law enforcement operations. The handover took place at the Chinese embassy in the United Kingdom.

The ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Zheng Zeguang, representatives of London’s Metropolitan Police, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and the British Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Cooperation under the UNESCO Convention

Rao Quan, China’s vice minister of culture and tourism and head of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, addressed the event via video link. The administration said the return was made possible through its cooperation with British authorities via the Chinese embassy.

China and the United Kingdom are parties to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on measures aimed at prohibiting and preventing the illicit import, export and transfer of ownership of cultural property.
