UK announces increased pressure on Israel over situation in Gaza

As reported by Anadolu Agency, UK First Secretary of State Louise Haigh said that the country would no longer stand by while innocent Palestinian children are dying in the Gaza Strip. She also promised to increase pressure on the Israeli government.

Louise Haigh’s statement

Speaking at the Trades Union Congress, Haigh said that the United Kingdom had been too slow to respond to the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. She added that the country had hesitated at a time when it was especially important to remind the world of its values.

According to Haigh, Britain should not stand by while Palestinian families suffer, children die in Gaza, and hope for a two-state solution disappears. She reiterated Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s assessment of the delayed response to events in Gaza and the West Bank.

Measures regarding settlements

Haigh said that the sanctions announced last week by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband were intended to change the United Kingdom’s approach. According to her, they are aimed at illegal settlements, should increase pressure on the Israeli government, and support hope for peace in the Middle East.

Miliband announced a ban on imports of goods from illegal Israeli settlements, sanctions against companies and individuals facilitating the expansion of settlements, as well as additional restrictions on Israeli extremist settlers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Palestinians.
