FBI Most Wanted Fugitive Anibal Canelon Aguirre Detained in Venezuela
The United States has confirmed the detention in Venezuela of Anibal Alexander Canelon Aguirre, known as El Ingeniero and Prometeo. He was on the FBI’s list of ten most wanted fugitives. As reported by Anadolu Agency, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the operation during a US Senate hearing on September 16.
Statement by the FBI director
According to Patel, Canelon was detained last weekend after several years in hiding. The FBI chief also said that the detainee is heading to the United States.
Canelon became the tenth fugitive from the current FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list to be detained during Patel’s tenure as bureau director.
During the same hearing, Patel stated that the FBI had made 54,000 arrests of people involved in violent crimes and 31,000 arrests of gang members. He also reported 5,072 arrests in cases involving people suspected of sexual crimes against children and human trafficking. According to him, the bureau found 11,081 children and made 4,260 arrests in cases involving foreign terrorist organizations.

Financial crime charges
According to the FBI, Canelon was charged with leading an international conspiracy whose participants, according to investigators, sent groups to the United States to steal millions of dollars from financial institutions in support of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua group.
The FBI stated that the network allegedly used so-called ATM jackpotting: malware or other methods caused ATMs to dispense cash without authorization. Canelon was also wanted on charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank robbery, and intentional damage to a protected computer system.
The FBI offered a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his detention. US authorities provided no further details about the circumstances of the operation or the involvement of Venezuelan authorities.
