Vienna to Double Tourist Tax

UA NEWS 19 July 2026 08:49
Vienna to Double Tourist Tax

Vienna authorities have announced a phased increase in the tourist tax. Previously set at 3.2% of the cost of accommodation, the rate was raised to 5% in July 2024 and will rise to 8%in July 2027.

City officials explain the decision as necessary to offset the growing strain on infrastructure caused by the increase in tourist traffic. According to officials, the additional revenue will be used to maintain and develop public transportation, roads, and municipal services.

Representatives of the hotel industry have criticized the new measure. They claim that after the increase, Vienna will have one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe—only Amsterdam charges more.

Tour operators have also expressed concern. They point out that travelers already pay a 12-euro tax on each airline ticket, and that the low-cost carrier Ryanair is increasingly choosing neighboring Bratislava for its flights due to lower costs.
