In the U.S., 16-year-old Braden Shaw caught a giant silver carp weighing about 37 kilograms while night fishing. This unusual catch could earn the teenager a junior record in bowfishing—fishing with a bow.

The incident occurred on the Ohio River in Kentucky. The boy and his friend were about to wrap up their fishing trip when he spotted a huge fish in the shallows.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the young angler’s equipment was damaged. He had only one arrow left, with a broken nock that kept falling off when he shot it.

“I was literally holding the spear in my hand because the shaft kept falling off,” Braden said.

After several failed attempts, the boy finally managed to hit the fish. Together with a friend, they struggled to pull the giant silver carp into the boat.

Since the catch was made around 3:30 a.m., the certified scales were no longer in operation. The fish had to be taken home and then transported the next morning to a specialized center in Eddville.

The official weigh-in showed a result of 82 pounds, or approximately 37 kilograms.

The catch is now in the running for a youth fishing record. The documentation has already been submitted to the American Sportfishing Association for review.

However, the battle for the record will not be easy. The current record is held by another Kentucky resident who, a few days ago, caught a silver carp weighing over 39 kilograms.

Silver carp is considered one of the most dangerous invasive fish species in the U.S. Environmentalists note that it actively displaces native species and disrupts the natural balance of water bodies, so the catch of large specimens is welcomed by conservationists.
