Video: A giant floating island drifting across a reservoir has been discovered in Canada
At Williston Reservoir in British Columbia, Canada, local resident Rocky Avery spotted an unusual object that looks like a real island but is actually a huge natural raft.
It was formed from dead wood and snags, on which trees and other vegetation have grown over time. The island’s existence was confirmed by Sentinel-2 satellite images from the European Space Agency.
According to satellite observations, the object appeared suddenly in the reservoir and later changed its location. Avery later spotted it again near the mouth of the Ospika River.

Experts speculate that the floating mass may have formed over many years in a sheltered bay. When water levels in Williston rose to a 14-year high earlier this year, it may have broken away from the shore and begun to drift.
Currently, the island poses no threat to the dam or other hydraulic structures. However, boat owners and fishermen are being warned of a potential navigational hazard.
