Video: An F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training flight in the U.S.
On Thursday, September 17, an F-16 fighter jet crashed in northern Michigan. The pilot managed to eject before the crash.
According to a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Military Affairs, the crash occurred in Grand Travers County during a routine training flight, and the pilot successfully ejected.
Michael Kroll, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, confirmed that the aircraft was an F-16 fighter jet belonging to the Texas Air National Guard.
Michigan State Police reported that the pilot is in stable condition and was transported to a local hospital.
There have been no reports of civilian casualties resulting from the incident, which occurred in a residential area, Township Administrator Blair Nicole Blonshain said in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon.
State police noted that a leak of hazardous chemicals resulting from the crash led to the evacuation of all commercial and residential properties within a one-mile radius. Later that same day, the evacuation order was lifted.
A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Defense stated that the incident is under investigation.
A recording of the conversation with the air traffic controller, obtained by NBC News, mentions a possible “mayday” call after the plane apparently struck a bird.
According to the Air Force, the F-16 Fighting Falcon is a “compact, multi-role fighter” that “is highly maneuverable and has proven its effectiveness in both air-to-air combat and strikes against ground targets.”
