Israeli forces are striking Basij positions in Tehran
The Israeli military has struck Basij positions and personnel in Tehran. This comes after the military reported the killing of an Iranian militia commander who had led the unit for the past six years. Iran has not yet confirmed the commander’s death, Al Jazeera reports.
The Israeli military stated that it has been attacking Iranian Basij militia personnel and positions in Tehran for the past few hours. “We are striking Basij facilities and personnel,” the military said in a statement.
The announcement of the attacks came after Israel reported the elimination of the unit’s commander, Gholamreza Soleimani, who had led the Basij for the past six years and was responsible for internal security. Iran has not officially confirmed Soleimani’s killing, and the circumstances of his death remain unknown.
Analysts note that Israel’s attacks could lead to an escalation of the conflict in the region, as the Basij is a key force in Iran’s internal security. At the same time, this is the first official move by the Israeli military following the elimination of a high-ranking commander, demonstrating the seriousness of Tel Aviv’s intentions.
