Lecturers at university in Awka declare indefinite strike over salaries
Lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria, have declared an indefinite strike over the incomplete payment of salaries for August 2026. The decision was made by the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Union decision
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the start of the strike was announced on September 7 by ASUU-UNIZIK chapter chair Innocent Nnubia and secretary Osita Nnajiophor. Nnamdi Azikiwe University is a federal higher education institution in Anambra State and is also known as UNIZIK.
The union said its members were suspending academic and administrative work in accordance with the current ASUU National Executive Council resolution on unpaid salaries.

Demand for full payment
According to the lecturers, the ASUU resolution allows chapters to stop work if salaries have not been paid after the third day of the following month. As of September 7, union members had not received their full salaries for August.
ASUU-UNIZIK stressed that the incomplete payment of August salaries was the sole reason for the strike. The union called on the university administration and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to ensure full payment of the funds and prevent the situation from recurring. According to the chapter's statement, the strike will continue until salaries are paid to all its members.
