Viktor Orbán has offered to step down as leader of the Fidesz party

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his willingness to step down as leader of his political party following an election defeat during a meeting with fellow party members.

According to a report by Telex, the final decision on his resignation has been postponed until the party convention, scheduled for June 13, 2026. Currently, Fidesz is preparing to move into opposition after 16 years in power.

Party representative Erik Banki confirmed Orbán’s proposal, while Tamás Deutsch noted that the politician is ready to continue leading the party if he has the support of his colleagues. Party member János Fonági emphasized that at this point, the current leader has no rivals, and most colleagues are in favor of retaining his powers. Despite the election setback, the internal party discussion regarding a leadership change remains open until the summer convention.

Political changes in Hungary are taking place against the backdrop of ongoing disputes with the EU and Budapest’s ambiguous stance on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. A weakening of Viktor Orbán’s position within the country could lead to a transformation of the state’s foreign policy course in the future. The future of Fidesz’s leadership will determine the party’s strategy as the main opposition force in the Hungarian parliament.

Hungary’s soon-to-be former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced his resignation from his parliamentary seat. However, he expressed his willingness to continue leading the Fidesz party if the party congress supports his candidacy.

Mátyás announced that Orbán’s oligarchs are preparing to flee abroad.
