The Rada has commented on rumors regarding the legalization of marriage at age 14
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved the revised draft Civil Code No. 15150, from which the most controversial provisions have been removed.
This was announced by Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. According to the speaker, following public outcry, lawmakers removed the provision lowering the minimum age for marriage from 14, leaving the current age of 16 in place.
In addition to the age requirement, the final version of the document does not include a ban on divorce during pregnancy or within a year after the birth of a child. Initiatives that could be interpreted as coercion into marriage or as strengthening the grounds for removing children from families were also rejected. Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized that the provisions on parental rights and adoption remained unchanged, and the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman remains unchanged in accordance with the Constitution.
The adoption of the updated code took place against the backdrop of active legal reforms that Ukraine continues to implement despite the challenges of war and Russian aggression. The Speaker noted that Parliament heeded criticism to avoid ambiguous interpretations in family law. The adopted document aims to modernize civil legislation while preserving basic social guarantees and protecting the interests of children.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the draft of the new Civil Code as a basis, which provides for a systematic update of private law and a transition to European standards.
Earlier, a new version of the Civil Code of Ukraine was registered in the Verkhovna Rada. The document proposes a comprehensive update of the rules governing private life, property, family relations, business, and human rights protection, particularly in the digital environment.
The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Policy recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt the draft of the new Civil Code of Ukraine in the first reading.
