Eight US Marines were injured during an attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14. NBC News reported this, citing three US officials, writes The Jerusalem Post.

Condition of the military personnel

According to NBC News, the vessel was struck by an Iranian cruise missile. The Marines did not sustain serious injuries, but suffered smoke inhalation and had concussion symptoms, including headaches.

Officials did not specify what type of vessel was struck. At the same time, they said that the Marines were not aboard a US Navy ship. All eight service members returned to duty shortly after the attack.

The Pentagon did not report the incident

The US Department of Defense did not publicly report either the September 14 attack or the injuries to US military personnel.

The Jerusalem Post also notes that the Pentagon's public data on service member casualties has drawn media attention. According to The Washington Post, at least four US service members who have died in the Middle East since the start of the war were not included in the official casualty count.

CBS News previously reported allegations that the severity of wounded service members' injuries had been downplayed. The US Army rejected these claims, saying that injury status designations have specific meanings that, in its view, were misinterpreted.
