Ammonia leak in Aqaba industrial zone injures 11 people — Jerusalem Post
Eleven people were injured as a result of an ammonia leak at an industrial facility in the Jordanian city of Aqaba. As a precautionary measure, authorities evacuated the city’s southern port, reports The Jerusalem Post, citing Reuters and Jordanian state television.
Condition of those injured
Nidal al-Ouran, commissioner for environment and public safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, said that the leak had already been contained. According to him, people sustained minor and moderate injuries.

Leak occurred during repairs
According to al-Ouran, the incident occurred during maintenance of an old pump or pressurized equipment in Aqaba’s southern industrial zone, which is located far from residential areas. A small amount of ammonia that had accumulated inside leaked from the equipment.
The official also said that repair work was being carried out for a Japanese company, without naming it. Workers will be allowed to return to their workplaces after a repeat inspection, the necessary measurements, and confirmation from authority specialists and other relevant services that there are no risks.
