Sweden’s Centre Party ready for talks with Social Democrats
In Sweden, the Centre Party has stated that it is ready to begin talks with the Social Democratic Party on forming a new government if opposition parties retain their advantage over the four right-wing parties. After a tense election, the Centre Party may play a decisive role in government formation.
The Centre Party’s position
Centre Party secretary Hannes Hervieu told the newspaper Expressen that the party is ready to form a strong and effective government together with the Social Democrats. According to The Local Sweden, the party again stressed that it does not want to join a government involving the so-called extreme parties — the far-right Sweden Democrats or the Left Party.
Hervieu said that, in his view, the voting results do not indicate support for either a leftward shift in economic policy or significant influence for the Sweden Democrats. In his assessment, voters instead seek political stability and a course with a clear centre-right character.

Reaction of the Social Democrats and the prime minister
Social Democrats’ justice spokesperson Teresa Carvalho positively assessed the Centre Party’s readiness to take responsibility for the current election result. She stated that if this result remains, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson must resign and Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson must form a government.
One of the Social Democratic Party’s leading representatives, Morgan Johansson, noted that his party is not ready to concede as many policy positions to the Centre Party as it did during the January Agreement of 2019. In his election-night speech, Kristersson also addressed the Centre Party and said that a non-socialist majority in Sweden could still form a government.
