WMO warns of strong El Niño at least until February

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), part of the UN system, has warned that the El Niño phenomenon will be very strong in the coming months. According to the organization’s forecast, it will last at least until February. YLE News reports.

Impact on weather

According to the WMO, El Niño will significantly affect precipitation levels and temperatures in different regions of the world. Among the risks associated with the phenomenon, the organization cited floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the planet is in the danger zone due to extreme weather events.

Restrictions on the Panama Canal

Earlier on Thursday, Panama announced restrictions on traffic through the Panama Canal due to a drought caused by El Niño.

El Niño occurs when sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean rise above average as a result of weakening trade winds.
