Waltz on the complexity of US-China competition in AI — Anadolu Agency
In the United States, the country’s ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, said that competition with China in artificial intelligence is more complex than the Cold War-era rivalry because of the close economic ties between the two countries. He said this in an interview with CNN, Anadolu Agency reports.
Competition in AI
According to Waltz, Washington sees an opportunity for limited bilateral agreements with Beijing during the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He mentioned rules on the proliferation of algorithms, nuclear weapons systems, and maintaining human control over such systems.
At the same time, the ambassador spoke out against domestic regulatory restrictions on American innovators and entrepreneurs developing the technological solutions of the future.
The Arctic and maritime routes
Waltz also linked the new US-Danish security agreement on Greenland to the need for early warning of a possible intercontinental missile attack. According to him, in the event of such an attack, missiles would fly over the Arctic, so radar and sensor systems in the region require protection and unhindered access.

The ambassador mentioned an agreement with Finland on icebreakers, increased defense spending in NATO, as well as the energy and critical mineral resources of the polar regions. In his view, melting ice facilitates the use of Arctic routes, which make it possible to bypass southern narrow sea passages.
Pressure on Iran
Waltz said that the United States and its allies would take decisive action against those who obstruct civilian shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Suez Canal. Responding to reports of a possible continuation of military clashes until 2029, he said that time is on Washington’s side.
According to him, sanctions against Tehran will remain in place until concessions on nuclear issues and Iran’s conduct are confirmed. Waltz also claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps controls between 40% and 50% of Iran’s economy.
CNN also reported that the Trump administration would prefer Saudi Arabia to counter the pressure without the direct use of American force. According to the broadcaster, the United States is expanding its sharing with Riyadh of targeting data and intelligence.
