Vučić: Not all EU countries support the accession of Ukraine and the Western Balkans to the Union

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that not all European Union countries view the prospects of Ukraine and the Western Balkan states joining the EU favorably.

According to him, he does not see a realistic possibility for Serbia’s rapid accession to the European Union due to political reasons.

“I don’t think it’s entirely clear that all Europeans view EU membership positively. For us, they’ll find the Croats, Bulgarians, and Dutch, and for Ukraine—someone else,” Vučić said.

At the same time, the Serbian leader emphasized that Belgrade will not stand in the way of Ukraine’s European integration.

“We won’t say, ‘Take us first; don’t take Ukraine.’ Ukraine will never face such a problem, at least not from a small country like Serbia,” he stated.

An official welcoming ceremony for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has begun in the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

On August 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will make his first official visit to Serbia. In Belgrade, he will meet with President Aleksandar Vučić—the two leaders plan to discuss the path to the EU, the economy, and energy. At the same time, Vučić stated that Zelenskyy’s visit does not mean a change in Serbia’s position regarding sanctions against Russia.
