The WSJ revealed what influenced Trump's change in attitude toward Zelenskyy and Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump has begun to show a more favorable attitude toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This shift in stance was influenced by both developments on the front lines and his interactions with people who support Ukraine.
According to the publication’s sources, Trump praised Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s resilience during the full-scale war and was impressed by the Ukrainian Defense Forces’ campaign of long-range strikes against Russian territory.
In addition, the U.S. president has taken an interest in Ukrainian drone technology after witnessing its effectiveness in military conflicts, particularly in the Middle East.
“Trump loves winners, and, in the U.S. president’s view, Zelenskyy is increasingly beginning to look like just that—a winner,” the publication quotes one of its sources as saying.
According to journalists, Trump’s views were also influenced by a meeting with Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk, which took place on the eve of the UFC fight night at the White House.
During the conversation, the boxer emphasized that Ukrainians are “fighters and winners,” and also told the U.S. president about his family’s life during the Russian shelling of Kyiv.
“Ukrainians are fighters and winners,” Usyk said, adding that the main difference between Ukrainians and Russians lies “in the mind and heart.”
Another factor that, according to The Wall Street Journal, may have influenced Donald Trump’s position was his repeated conversations with far-right activist and blogger Laura Loomer.
As the publication notes, Loomer, who had previously publicly criticized Ukraine, has recently changed her stance and begun to openly support Kyiv.
According to sources, it was the combination of Ukraine’s military successes, Trump’s personal impressions of Zelenskyy, the development of Ukrainian drone technology, and his interactions with influential interlocutors that contributed to the shift in the U.S. president’s rhetoric regarding Ukraine.
