Zelenskyy spoke with Péter Mádár on the sidelines of the European Union summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungary’s new Prime Minister Péter Magyar had a brief conversation in Brussels during the European Council meeting. Although the Hungarian prime minister did not specifically mention the meeting with the Ukrainian president in his summary of the summit’s first day, the fact that they spoke is confirmed by photos published from the meeting room.

Péter Magyar noted that during his debut speech at the European summit, he called on his colleagues to exercise the utmost honesty and to reject political correctness and double standards in European politics. The Hungarian prime minister specifically emphasized that he does not aim to gain cheap popularity in Brussels or among other European leaders.

According to him, the top priority of his work in this position remains the firm and uncompromising representation of the national interests of the Hungarian people.

This was revealed in a post by Magyar on his X account.

Hungary initiated the removal of language regarding Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU from the final declaration of the European Union summit. According to the Hungarian prime minister, the decision was made literally at the last moment and was not an easy one for him.

Ukraine’s plan to open all negotiation chapters in the EU accession process in July 2026 may be derailed due to a lack of time to coordinate positions and carry out the necessary procedures
