Zelenskyy to attend EU summit in Cyprus today — Politico
Today, April 23, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attending an informal meeting of European Union heads of state and government currently taking place in Cyprus.
This was reported by Politico.
European Council President António Costa confirmed the Ukrainian leader’s in-person attendance.
The visit comes amid significant geopolitical shifts in Europe and the release of critically important financial aid for Kyiv.
The main topics of the summit in Nicosia and Ayia Napa are strengthening defense support for Ukraine, discussing the 20th package of sanctions against the aggressor, and the situation in the Middle East.
European leaders plan to finally approve a €90 billion (about $105 billion) loan for Ukraine today.
This decision had been stalled for a long time due to a veto by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The situation changed after the parliamentary elections in Hungary on April 12, where the Fidesz party was defeated by the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar.
Orbán, who remains in office for now but is preparing to hand over power, did not travel to Cyprus, which paved the way for a consolidated EU decision.
It is symbolic that the approval of financial aid at 1:00 p.m. effectively coincides with the resumption of oil pumping through the Druzhba pipeline toward Hungary and Slovakia.
Transit had been suspended due to damage to the Ukrainian section of the pipeline caused by hostilities.
The completion of repair work removed the last formal pretext Budapest had used to justify blocking the aid.
“Europe has already demonstrated its ability to fulfill its commitments and intends to continue doing so,” emphasized António Costa, commenting on the unity of the alliance.
