Residents of Hong Kong fire-ravaged complex petition authorities to rebuild their homes

More than 100 survivors of the Wang Fuk Court housing complex fire in Hong Kong have signed a petition urging the government to restore the damaged buildings. The open letter is addressed to the city’s chief executive, John Lee, and Finance Minister Paul Chan, highlighting the urgent need for action.

The residents emphasize that they lost not just their homes but their community as well, having lived in the complex for many years and having “become a family” over time. They view returning to their former homes as the only way to regain “dignity and hope.” The November 26 fire destroyed seven of the eight blocks of the complex, claiming at least 161 lives — the deadliest fire on record in Hong Kong. Currently, over 4,600 people are housed in temporary accommodations, including hotels, hostels, and public housing units.

The petition is expected to accelerate government decisions on rebuilding the complex and enable survivors to return home, which holds significant social importance for both residents and the city.
