Journalist Awuni urges Ghana’s courts to expedite corruption cases — MyJoyOnline

Journalist and anti-corruption activist Manasseh Azure Awuni called on Ghana’s judiciary to prioritize corruption cases and expedite their consideration. He spoke in the city of Ho during an Asogli State event dedicated to choral singing and the fight against corruption, MyJoyOnline reports.

Call for faster case hearings

According to Awuni, people accused of embezzling public funds should not be allowed to use legal loopholes and deliberately delay court proceedings in the hope that a change of government will lead to such cases being discontinued. The event was held under the theme of strengthening institutional integrity, transparency and good governance for sustainable national development.

The activist also called on the judiciary to rid itself of corruption so that it can effectively lead the nationwide fight against this phenomenon. He said that people who misappropriate public funds often have enough money to attempt to bribe participants throughout the entire accountability system.

Awuni added that developed countries have been able to curb corruption through strict enforcement of laws, while Africa, in his assessment, suffers from unchecked abuse. He called on law enforcement agencies to conscientiously carry out their mandates and on the state to take measures that would make corruption extremely unprofitable.

Statements by event participants

Awuni thanked Togbe Afede XIV for establishing an Anti-Corruption Day to draw attention to its destructive impact on the country’s development. He also called on traditional leaders not to intervene on behalf of officials in corruption cases.

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, called corruption the greatest obstacle to Ghana’s socioeconomic development. According to him, the Asogli Anti-Corruption Day was established to spread awareness of the structural damage caused by corruption. Daniel Domelevo, chairman of the board of the Economic and Organised Crime Office, added that no country can achieve long-term socioeconomic progress without sustained attention to the problem of corruption.
