Journalist Elouise Massa to run in Manly after hospital campaign
Former journalist Elouise Massa has announced that she will run as an independent candidate in the Manly electorate in the New South Wales state parliamentary election in Australia. The vote is due to take place in March 2027. Her announcement came a few days after the sitting Liberal Party MP, James Griffin, said he would not seek re-election.
As ABC News Australia reports, Massa became known for campaigning to bring Northern Beaches Hospital into the public healthcare system. She began the campaign after the death of her two-year-old son Joe in 2024.
Changes after the family campaign
A review identified several shortcomings in the boy’s treatment. The Massa family’s campaign also helped establish a system that allows families to seek a review of concerns about a child’s medical care.

In addition, the so-called Joe’s Law was passed, banning future public-private partnerships in major hospitals. In April, Northern Beaches Hospital officially returned to public ownership.
Election in Manly
Massa intends to campaign on healthcare, housing and transport issues. According to her, an independent MP would represent the interests of residents of Sydney’s Northern Beaches better than a party representative.
The Liberal Party has held the Manly electorate for almost 20 years, since it was won by former state premier Mike Baird. At the same time, from 1991 to 2007, the electorate was represented by independent MPs Peter Macdonald and David Barr. The Liberals have not yet announced a candidate to replace Griffin.
