Trump's Son-in-Law Is Preparing for an Important Visit to Israel — Axios
U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, plans to travel to Israel next week to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. This will be his first visit to the country since January of this year.
According to Axios, Kushner is set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials. The main topic of the talks will be advancing the U.S. plan for the future of Gaza and the next phase of the peace initiative.
The publication reports that this will be Kushner’s first trip to Israel since January. It comes amid efforts by the White House and Donald Trump’s Peace Council to advance the next phase of the Gaza plan, which focuses on disarming Hamas and the potential withdrawal of Israeli troops.
At the same time, Netanyahu’s government is extremely skeptical of the U.S. plan for Gaza, and the upcoming elections in October make this issue even more politically sensitive.
“We share the view on the strategic goal, but Israel has expressed certain reservations about the plan, and we want to hold talks with them to ensure coordination of our actions,” the U.S. official said, noting that the exact dates of the visit are subject to change.
According to Axios, Kushner plans to travel to Israel alongside Nikolay Mladenov, who has been appointed “High Representative” of the Peace Council in Gaza. He intends to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials.
In addition, Kushner may travel to other Middle Eastern countries to hold talks with regional leaders involved in resolving the Gaza issue.
The White House does not want the Israeli elections to slow down the implementation of the next phase of the plan. At the same time, Netanyahu does not want to make concessions that could harm him politically. But he also does not want a confrontation with Trump on the eve of the elections.
Axios reports that Kushner and Mladenov want to reach an understanding with Netanyahu on the next steps in Gaza over the next few months.
“We’re in no rush. We want to make sure that all steps in Gaza are taken properly. We believe our plan is better than the alternative,” said one U.S. official.
