Heavy rains have put the Mundi Mundi Bash music festival in Australia at risk

Several days of heavy rain in the far west of the Australian state of New South Wales have put the Mundi Mundi Bash music festival at risk. The event organizers, whose venue is located about 40 kilometers northwest of the city of Broken Hill, are deciding whether to hold the festival. This decision affects about 15,000 ticket holders, according to ABC News Australia.

The inclement weather has made it difficult for cars and RVs to reach the festival grounds. Some visitors waited all night to enter, and a few vehicles got stuck in the mud. Wilangee Road, the route leading to the festival, was closed to all vehicles except those with four-wheel drive. Part of the festival grounds was flooded.

Visitor Monique McGrath, who came to the Mundi Mundi Bash with a group of 14 friends, said they got in line around 1:00 p.m. the previous day and were only able to enter the grounds in the morning. According to her, one member of the group got stuck, so they were waiting for a vehicle to evacuate him.

Other guests who arrived from Adelaide in six caravans reported waiting for over four hours. They noted that the roads on the grounds, which had been dry two years ago, had turned into muddy patches. Some people had to spend the night on the access roads after the gates closed.

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, 11.6 mm of rainfall was recorded at Broken Hill Airport on Monday and Tuesday. The average rainfall for August in Broken Hill is about 18 mm, but over the past two weeks, the region has already experienced two significant periods of rain that exceeded the monthly average. Forecasters predicted more rain and possible thunderstorms overnight and the following day: depending on their intensity, rainfall could range from a few millimeters to 10–15 mm.

The organizers stated that they plan to provide an update on the event’s status at 2:00 p.m.
