Gold from Colombian cartels may have ended up at the U.S. Mint — NYT

According to The New York Times, the U.S. Mint may have been involved in schemes to launder gold of dubious origin, specifically linked to the Colombian Clan del Golfo cartel. This metal is used to mint investment coins, including the “American Gold Eagle,” whose annual sales exceed $1 billion.

Journalists report that the scheme begins in Colombia, where the cartel controls illegal mining, after which the gold is laundered through intermediaries and exported. According to the investigation, some of this gold ended up in the U.S., where it was melted down and mixed with gold from other sources, after which it was officially considered American.

An official from the Bucha Trade and Customs Center explained where he obtained goldworth 7.7 million hryvnias.

Gold lost more than 2% in a day — Reuters.

As a reminder, gold has once again surpassed $5,000 per ounce.

Gold and silver prices are also falling sharply.
