Dispute surrounding Macklemore
The concert cancellations came amid a dispute over the removal of American rapper Macklemore from Sheeran's tour lineup following his statements in support of Palestine. During his opening performances for Sheeran's concerts on September 4 and 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the rapper said “Free Palestine” and performed the protest song Hind’s Hall.
New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft opposed Macklemore performing at the venue following these statements. Macklemore wrote on Instagram that Sheeran, whom he called a friend of 13 years, informed him of an alleged boycott organized by Kraft among other stadium owners if the rapper was not removed from the lineup. Sheeran said the decision was made by concert venues and promoters, not by him.
