Camilla, Queen of the United Kingdom, celebrates her 79th birthday
On July 17, Camilla, Queen of the United Kingdom, celebrates her 79th birthday. Her love story with King Charles III, which began more than half a century ago, has become one of the most famous and talked-about in the modern history of the British monarchy.
According to biographers of the royal family, the future couple met in the early 1970s in London through a mutual friend, Lucia Santa Cruz. It was then that feelings developed between the then-Prince Charles and Camilla Shand.
However, their romance ended in 1973 when Charles left to serve in the Royal Navy. Camilla later married British Army officer Andrew Parker-Bowles, while Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.
Despite this, their relationship continued for many years and became the subject of widespread public discussion. The story gained particular notoriety after Princess Diana’s 1995 interview, in which she stated that there were “three of us” in her marriage.
Charles and Camilla were officially married in 2005—35 years after they first met. Initially, Buckingham Palace stated that Camilla would not hold the title of queen; however, before her death, Queen Elizabeth II expressed her wish that Camilla become queen consort upon Charles’s accession to the throne.
Following the coronation of Charles III in 2023, Camilla officially received the title of Queen of Great Britain. Today, she is celebrating her 79th birthday as the wife of the reigning British monarch.
