Frank Beard, the legendary drummer for ZZ Top, has died
Frank Bird died on August 17 at the age of 77 at his ranch in Richmond, Texas. The legendary ZZ Top drummer was in hospice care, surrounded by his family.
ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons called Bird a great friend and collaborator and highlighted his contribution to the band’s sound. According to Gibbons, the musician was one of the most innovative drummers and a true Texan, and his signature backbeat became an integral part of ZZ Top’s success.
Due to the musician’s death, the band canceled its next two concerts—in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. At the same time, ZZ Top plans to continue the tour, fulfilling Bird’s own wish to keep performing. The upcoming concerts are scheduled to take place in Austin.
Before his death, Bird had already been experiencing health problems. In early August, he left the band’s current tour, and on August 5, he was unable to take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl. During the most recent concerts, Michael Monahan filled in for him on drums.
Band representatives announced his death but did not disclose the cause.
