Romeo Tan speaks about ‘middle child syndrome’

Mediacorp actor Romeo Tan said that as a child he experienced the so-called middle child syndrome and was sometimes jealous of his older and younger brothers. He said this in an interview with Chinese-language media outlet Vibes by 8world, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Relationships with his brothers

The 41-year-old Tan has an older brother who is six years his senior and a younger brother who is five years younger. As a child, he shared a bunk bed with his younger brother, which made them particularly close. The actor considered his older brother a good role model.

According to Tan, his older and younger brothers are less close to each other, so he acts as a mediator in their communication. The actor said that his mother compared him with his older brother, whom she called a role model, and with his younger brother, whom she considered obedient. Tan felt that he had to measure up to both brothers, but his mother never praised him.

However, this did not interfere with their relationship. According to the actor, the brothers respect one another and get along well, while occasional arguments pass quickly.

Childhood and the series

Tan also admitted that he was mischievous as a child, had difficulties with studying and caused his parents trouble. He said that he continued working on himself: during national service, he became an officer, which made his parents proud. Now, according to the actor, they also believe that he has done well in his profession.

Tan is currently filming the multigenerational Mediacorp series Brighter Days, whose plot spans more than three decades. He plays two roles: Lee Zhongcheng, who works as a nanny in 1996, and his son Lee Yiwei in 2026. In the plot, Yiwei deals with the consequences of his younger brother's disappearance in childhood; the incident also caused depression in his mother. After his brother is found, Yiwei tries to earn his forgiveness for the pain he caused.
