Five agricultural colleges in Ghana receive digital tools for education — MyJoyOnline

Five agricultural colleges in Ghana have received digital equipment to teach students climate-smart farming technologies. The support was provided by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the UN World Food Programme in partnership with the country’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture, MyJoyOnline reports.

Equipment for practical training

The equipment was handed over to colleges in Kwadaso, Damongo, Wenchi, Ohawu and Ejura. The sets included 60 moisture meters, soil testers, training kits for monitoring greenhouse conditions, kits for training in the use of IoT sensors, and GPS devices for each college. The colleges also received starter weather station kits, agricultural spraying and drone flight simulation systems, as well as software for processing agricultural data.

Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku said the equipment is intended to give students practical experience in using technologies across different stages of agricultural production. According to him, digital tools can help assess soil conditions before applying nutrients, use weather data to plan planting, and monitor soil moisture for more efficient water use.

Training for teachers and students

College teachers and mentors are also expected to complete a practical drone operation training programme lasting three to four weeks. The digital agricultural education programme will subsequently be gradually introduced for students at all five institutions.

World Food Programme Country Director in Ghana Aurore Rusiga noted that agricultural colleges train advisers, technicians, specialists and entrepreneurs who will work directly with farmers. The initiative continues support for practical skills development at Ghana’s agricultural colleges, which began in 2025 with a training programme on post-harvest mechanisation.
